This year’s Old-Fashioned Country Christmas will be held in the Centennial Plaza. The committee is very excited about the event and feels that the restored Eaton house, the log cabin, and IXL School house will add to the old-fashioned charm of this event.

One of the things we would like to add this year is booth space. There should be plenty of space along the sidewalks within the plaza for at least 20 booths. The booth space is FREE, but you will have to provide your own 6 or 8 ft table and tent covering (if you want it.) You should probably not count on electricity being available. Some suggestions for booths:

- Local crafters: Sell merchandise

- Local businesses: sell merchandise, give away promotional items, hold a raffle

- Local churches: give away small snacks or offer craft activities or games for kids, raise money with a silent auction.

- Local organizations: hold a raffle, offer craft activities or games for kids, hold a silent auction

…basically anything to add to the enjoyment of the event for attendees, particularly kiddoes.

To secure a booth space, reply to this email to let me know of your intention AND return the attached form to me either by mail, fax, (info is on the form) or in person at the Nov 19/Dec 3 Chamber meeting. I don’t have every one’s email address, so please forward this along to anyone you think might be interested.

By the way, here are some of the activities that we are pretty sure we have lined up for the evening:

·         5 pm - ?: POSSE will host a chili/stew supper in the Vassar Building starting around 5pm.
·         6pm – 8pm: Hay rides - will load north of Old Service Station

Old Settlers' Day is Perkins' annual fall event. The fun kicks off at 9 a.m. with vendor booths downtown. You'll find lots of crafts, games, gift ideas and foods throughout the morning. Make sure you have your spot picked out to enjoy... the big parade, which begins at 10 a.m. The parade theme this year is "Frontier Spirit," and it will feature Perkins' founding families and founding businesses. You'll see pretty girls, horses, teams and classes, politicians, tiny tots, tractors, Native American costumes, horses, bikes, classic cars, and of course, bands. The kids will really enjoy lots of fun games, and you'll even get to see some great entertainers or throw a horseshoe or two, if you like!

I love shopping, working, visiting, eating, going to the ballgames-I love Perkins! I have the best job right here in Perkins-Best people to work with! And yep it is part of my job to promote Perkins!

I would like to let you know how easy and inexpensive it is to get your business information out in print! Print advertising in our newspaper is the best way to increase your business for local residents as well as readers from surrounding areas that have picked up a newspaper sold thru one of the many convenient stores surrounding the Stillwater and Perkins communities such as Wal-Mart, Hastings, Food Pyramid, On-Cue, Kum-N-Go, etc. Many who purchase our newspaper want to live or have an association thru our great community. We cannot rely on word of mouth for every reader. We must advertise. Lucky for us advertising rates are very reasonable in our community and I have been told by many that our newspaper contains the best news in the area. So I thought I better get with you and let you know our rates.

A business card size ad measures 2 columns x 2" you can place your card on any page of our newspaper for only $25.00 per week-heck use a repetition advertising method and place two within our paper the same week only $50 bucks. A display advertisement of 2 columns x 5" is only $62.50 just to give you an idea of rate reduction according to size you can run a 32" advertisement each week for only $128.00! Design is free of charge.

You may contact me thru email, phone or text me if you think of something and you cannot talk! Yes, I have clients that text me their thoughts and hours later their ad is ready for proofing via email. Deadline for next week's newspaper is always Friday at 5pm/sometimes I can sneak one in on Lisa and David on Mondays. Here's some ideas I had in mind for you - If you have a weekly special let's tell the readers about it. Announcements:
- Travis Majors invited everyone to attend a dinner theatre Sept. 10, 12 and 13 at the First Baptist Church. The evening performances on the 10th and 12th will feature a play titled “All I Ever Wanted,” with a dessert-only matinee on Sunday, the 13th. Tickets are $5 each. To reserve tickets, call 547-2494 (day) or 742-7274 (evening).

Minutes: Minutes from the Aug. 20 meeting were emailed to members earlier this week. David Sasser made a motion to approve the minutes; Jack Vassar seconded; motion passed.

Board and Committee Reports:
~Old Settlers’ Day: Committee chair Jacque Vassar said plans are well underway, and they’re now mainly waiting on parade entry forms. She said The Journal will feature an article about Perkins’ founding families and businesses (circa 1900 or earlier). They hope to have representatives from founding families to serve as parade marshals.
~Pistol Pete Run: Lynn Kinder said they have already received 45 pre-registrations and expect more, including the Stillwater High School cross country team. He said approximately 10 more volunteers are needed to help with the event. If you can help that morning, please contact him or Roger Gilbert. Kinder said Pistol Pete will be busy with a home football game that day, so he won’t be there to start the race. Sheri Carter, Stillwater Area United Way director, will fire the starting pistol. Net proceeds from the run will go to United Way this year.

~Chamber Facebook page: Cindy Sheets set up a new Facebook page for chamber. Reedy asked everyone who uses Facebook to visit the page and become a ‘fan’ so they’ll receive info and notifications that are posted. Currently two events have been set up within the page: Old Settlers’ Day and the Pistol Pete Run. ~You can also search for ‘Perkins Chamber’ within Facebook, or ask Sheets or Reedy for a quick link to the page. Reedy said she has also visited with city manager Pete Seikel about updating chamber’s info on the city website.

Program: Pete Seikel, Perkins city manager
City manager Pete Seikel gave a short update on city matters.

A new public works staff member, Art Lage, has been hired. He said Art is very knowledgeable about IT matters and is helping with website updates. He hopes to get that done by Christmas. Art was also invaluable in getting the city up and running again after a lightning strike a couple of weeks ago knocked out lots of equipment and electronics. He said they have recovered about 85 percent so far.

Economic development and activity:
Seikel said there’s been a significant decrease in sales tax collections in town from two years ago. He believes people are just spending less because we really haven’t lost businesses.
The grocery store was a concern for several months. After Affiliated Foods declared bankruptcy, it was discovered they were delinquent to the state for sales taxes. However, the new owner, Williams Foods, is now doing much better than expected. Mel Miller noted he feels the quality of goods at the store has improved, with the new ownership, and pointed out that the same supplier provides groceries for both Williams and Consumers IGA in Stillwater.

This year the city sales tax is estimated at $600,000.

There’s now a new business in the old Buffalo Hill location.

Wastewater treatment plant: Construction on the new wastewater treatment plant started June 9. Seikel said he and the city commission felt the acceptance of the federal stimulus funds was the city’s best option, but of course, the funds came with strings attached – requirements to buy American products, etc.
He said if there are stimulus funds left, Perkins has a chance to receive additional money.
The project is behind schedule, mainly because there are delays in obtaining American parts. Until the parts get in, excavation work cannot proceed because the plant will be constructed at the site of the current plant. Until then, they are doing the things they can do, such as putting in water lines, etc.

Code enforcement: the city has been receiving lots of complaints about code enforcement. Seikel explained the enforcement process is expensive because of legal requirements and the city does not have enough staff members to concentrate efforts on code enforcement. He said the last abatement occurred in December of 2008, but another one will probably appear on the September city commission meeting agenda.
H1N1: Seikel said the city staff has been involved in planning how to handle operations if the H1N1 virus gets bad in Perkins.
Red Bud Assisted Living Center: Seikel said there are currently 20 residents at Red Bud. He said, despite rumors, the rates at the center are not going up. Miller noted Red Bud is much less expensive than the Renaissance Center in Stillwater.
Perkins Senior Citizens Center president LeRoy Gibson noted the center picks up Red Bud residents each Monday and transports them to the center for Monday Night Music.

CHARMED: Funding for 30 additional homes in the CHARMED addition may soon be secured. The organization came up approximately $1.5 million short in funds and had to apply for more. Seikel said the new homes will go up next to the first addition.

Meetings: The next meeting of the chamber will be held at noon, Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Perkins Lions Den. Farmer’s Daughter Bakery will provide lunch. Larry Brown from the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce will present the program.

Perkins Community Chamber of Commerce will have the first meeting of 2008 on Thursday, January 3rd at Noon in the Perkins Lion's Den.

The meal will be catered by Sandstone Coffee & Sandwich Shop.

Members pay $6.00 and non-members pay $7.00 for meals.

To my knowledge, the Program has not been determined at this time.

As the New Year starts, so does membership for Chamber. All memberships become due on January 1, 2008. Application forms & information will be provided at the Chamber meeting.

Announcements:
- Regina Hall brought Smart Start Payne County ‘Spirit of the Family’ awards applications. She said Smart Start is will recognize businesses that have strong family workplace policies. Large and small companies will be considered. Two businesses in both Perkins and Cushing will be selected, and four businesses in Stillwater will receive the award. The awards will be presented at a luncheon Oct. 24 at Meditations in Stillwater. The luncheon will also feature a speaker who will
discuss economic development and young children.
- Hall also noted Smart Start’s Kid’s Calendar for Fall 2007 was printed this week. Smart Start entered a partnership with The Journal to produce the tab, which is a compilation of activities in Payne County for families and children. Hall had some of the calendars on hand. The calendars are produced three times per year: fall, spring and summer.
Minutes: Pat Bickell made a motion to approve the minutes of the Aug. 2 meeting; Harland Wells seconded; motion approved. Secretary Cindy Sheets expressed thanks to Dan Johnson, who took minutes at the last two meetings during her absence.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Jalyn Bailey reported a balance of $27,084.97. Roger Gilbert made a motion to approve the report; Rena Hines seconded; motion approved.
Board and Committee Reports:
Business Fair: Pat Bickell reported the Business Fair, which was held Monday, Aug. 13, was a success. She said more than 40 tables of vendors participated. Superintendent James Ramsey said everyone was happy with the Fair. “Even I, because I won a big jar of beef jerky,” he said.
Harvest Fest: OSHF parade applications have been sent out. Some applications were also available during the meeting. Dan Johnson said committee chair Chris Petermann needs help soon in the promotion area. If you want to help with that, or anything during Harvest Fest, please email Chris.
The next committee meeting will be held at noon Tuesday, Aug. 28, at D’Mario’s.
Pistol Pete Run: The next committee meeting will be held at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Aug. 17) at Jalopy’s.
Old Business:
Sound system for downtown: no discussion or action
Christmas lighting for Main Street: no discussion or action
New Business: none
Program: Perkins-Tryon School superintendent James Ramsey presented a short program about the new
school year, which started today (Aug. 16). Ramsey showed a six-minute video, then spoke about new hires and changes at the schools; capital improvement projects; reported enrollment as of today is 1,396.
Ramsey said he turned down numerous transfer applications during the summer. A few at each campus were approved just before school started.
Ramsey said the next building project on the school’s collective list is an addition for Fine Arts. However, considering the school’s growth, he wouldn’t recommend pursuing that unless an 8 to 10 room addition of classrooms was built at the same time. Ramsey said he has mixed feelings about the possibility of an extended school day. He thinks it’s not a good idea for the younger children, but he’d support a longer day for the junior high and high school. He also said he thinks either an extended day or longer school year will eventually happen.
The superintendent said P-T is considered a 4A school in everything but football (2A). Next year football will be 3A.
Meetings: The next general membership meeting of the chamber will be at noon, Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Lion’s Den. Beth Skye will report about the Perkins Animal Shelter. Hello! Catering will cater the luncheon.

It’s that time again! The Perkins Chamber of Commerce cordially invites you to participate in the 2007 OLD SETTLER’S DAY PARADE. (PDF Form and Info on Menu Bar under Calendar, or Click Here.)

The event will be held SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, beginning promptly at 10:00 a.m. Parade registration/line-up will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Please note the parade will lineup in a different location this year. Line up will be on the WEST side of town this year on Kenworthy (by the old football field). Please provide an email address on your application so that your entry number can be emailed to you a few days before (please let everyone in your group know what your entry number is). The morning of the parade you will be able to go directly to your line-up location. An information table will be set-up at the corner of West 3rd and Kenworthy the morning of the parade.

This year’s parade theme: “Centennial on the Cimarron”. Don’t miss our exciting celebration by being late with your entries: The deadline for entries this year is Wednesday, September 12th (Entries received after September 12 may be placed behind the horses).

Just a reminder of the Perkins Community Chamber of Commerce Business Fair to be held on Monday, August 13, 2007 at the P-T High School Commons Area. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. for vendors to set-up. Fair hours are from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m.

If you would like to participate, please notify me for more info & an application. All PCCC members will not be charged for a booth. Non-members will be charged $15.00, due before the Fair.

Debbie Clinesmith & I will be canvassing all businesses on a day next week. You may sign up at that time or call/email me for info and an application. For those who wish to offer give-aways at their booth, there are about 150 staff & personnel at the Perkins Schools who will be attending. Also, prize drawings from items donated by participating businesses will be held. This year, there will also be a drawing for the Vendors...(participating businesses)! So you've gotta be there for that!

Deadline is getting short so please respond asap. Hope to see a large group there.

-Travis Majors said Good News Community Church will be holding its Vacation Bible School July 9-12 at Oak Park Retreat Center.
-Bob Johnson said GNCC will also be hosting Dr. Thomas Sharp. Sharp is the co-president of an earth museum who will be speaking about creationism at Oak Park Sunday evening at 7 p.m. Sharp is also bringing the museum’s dinosaur display with him.
-Shelley Ricker said United Way is once again raffling a new boat. The boat and motor, valued at $10,000, were provided by MerCruiser as a fundraiser for the organization. Tickets are available for $10 each or 6 for $50. To purchase tickets, visit Payne County Bank in Perkins or the United Way office in Stillwater. The drawing will be July 24.
-Beth Skye, a volunteer with the Perkins Animal Shelter, said the group will soon be expanding its volunteer base and community programs. They will also be conducting a community survey, which will look at ways to serve pet owners, and non-pet owners, better.

Minutes: Chris Petermann made a motion to approve the minutes of the June 21 meeting; Pat Bickell seconded; motion approved.
Treasurer’s Report: In the absence of Treasurer Jalyn Bailey, Chris Petermann reported a balance of $27,471.17. He also noted there are STILL those who need to pay their 2007 membership dues.

Board and Committee Reports:
Business Fair: Gill said Pat Bickell and Debbie Clinesmith are working on organizing this years Business Fair. The event will be held Monday morning, Aug. 13, at the high school commons area. If anyone has questions or needs more information about the Business Fair, they are asked to contact Bickell or Clinesmith.
Old Settlers’ Harvest Fest/Pistol Pete Run: Gill said Chris Petermann will chair the committee for OSHF this year. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 22. Jamie Andrews will chair the committee for the Pistol Pete Run that same day. Petermann said he’d appreciate volunteers to help with organizing OSHF. He’ll bring a sign-up sheet to the next chamber meeting.

Old Business:
Picnic: Gill said plans for a chamber family picnic had been discussed during the last meeting, but since then he noted it was difficult to get as good a response as he’d hoped, so he decided to cancel the plans.
July 19 caterer: The next meeting will be held as usual at noon, Thursday, July 19, at the Lions Den. Gill said he hopes that Buffalo Hill will cater the luncheon, but that has yet to be confirmed.
Hello! Catering is lined up to cater meals for first Thursday meetings for the rest of the year, but third Thursday meetings are still open for the second half of this year.
If anyone knows of other caterers who’d be interested in providing meals for the chamber meetings, they are asked to contact Gill.

New Business:
DA Stop Loss meeting: Gill introduced Stan Templeton who spoke briefly about a DA Stop Loss community meeting planned for noon on Tuesday, July 10, at the Lions Den. Everyone is invited to bring a brown bag lunch and listen to a program about the new bogus check program being implemented by District Attorney Rob Hudson’s office. Templeton said past programs have been cumbersome and hard to use. This new program is extremely easy for merchants to use and is a big benefit to them. There is no cost to merchants or to the DA’s office. Fees are paid by the bogus check writers. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Program: Chris Petermann introduced a short wrap-up program about the Oklahoma FreeWheel visit on June 13.
Cindy Sheets presented a slide program that featured photos taken during the visit.
Ellen Proctor of Oklahoma FreeWheel relayed her thoughts about the group’s visit in Perkins. She said Perkins was selected as the “Best Host Community.” She said she was impressed by how quickly the community responded and reacted when storms and flooding caused many changes in plans. She also expressed the main reasons that Perkins was selected for the top honor this year:
-Organizers reaction to the flooding situation.
-The friendliness of everyone in town.
-Free water
-The riders loved the vendors downtown and the ‘carnival atmosphere’
-Wonderful food and drink, ‘Everything was top drawer’
-Impact Youth Center provided a great place for children on the tour
-Plenty of indoor camping
-The evening movie made them feel like they were at home
-The motivational speaker
Proctor said approximately 875 bicyclists and a couple hundred support people were in town that evening.
At the end of the tour, FreeWheelers are asked to vote for their favorite stop, and instead of just writing “Perkins” on their ballot, many of them wrote sentiments like, “Perkins, hands-down” or “Absolutely Perkins.”
Proctor then presented a “Best Host Community” plaque to Gill and committee co-chairs Cheryl Sheldon and Travis Majors.

Meetings: The next general membership meeting of the chamber will be at noon, Thursday, July 19, at the Lion’s Den. Buffalo Hill is the scheduled caterer, and Kelly Sasser will present the program.

For those of you who may not know about Air Evac, we are a helicopter ambulance service that provides much needed emergency coverage for 13 Midwestern states. Kendra Moreland made a motion to approve the minutes of the May 17 meeting; Patty Johnson seconded; motion approved.

Treasurer’s Report:
Treasurer Jalyn Bailey reported a balance of $29,243.43. She said there still may be a few invoices and some checks out from the golf tournament. Moreland added that the green fees certificates will also still be trickling in. Jeff Gill noted there is a list of paid chamber members at Jalyn’s table. He asked everyone to please check that list to see if they have paid for 2007. Anyone whose name is not on the list, but they have paid, should contact Bailey to get it corrected. Also, if you haven’t paid yet, please do so ASAP.

Board and Committee Reports:
- FreeWheel: Committee co-chair Cheryl Sheldon said lots of volunteers are needed to help out during the day. Some heavy lifters are needed to help the high school football team with moving luggage. She hopes to get permission from the Lion’s Club to sit some chairs out in front of the building for the FreeWheel riders. She also asked Main Street businesses to remember to put out water or signs welcoming the riders to town that day. Sheldon said lots of vendors have signed up to participate. The committee will be putting up signs south of town to welcome the riders. “We’re excited,” she said.
- GPAEDA: Kendra Moreland said the group will not hold its next regularly scheduled meeting on June 13 because of the FreeWheel visit. She will notify everyone by email when the next meeting is scheduled.
- Leadership Perkins: Moreland said Leadership Perkins Class 1 is busy organizing for Class 2. The class is scheduled to start in October. Applications will be out in July and due in August.

- Centennial Stamp: Mel Miller suggested that everyone contact the U.S. Postal Service to request the Oklahoma Centennial Stamp be reprinted. He reminded everyone that postage rates for first class stamps has gone up to 41 cents. Now the Centennial stamp must have a supplemental stamp. He said, since the year is not yet half over, the USPS should reissue the stamp. It will only take about five minutes to visit www.usps.com, click the “Contact Us” option and email a message.

Program:
Jalyn Bailey introduced Frank Chappell with Sunflower Communities presented a program about a new assisted living center planned for Perkins. The company currently operates 28 properties in ten states.
Chappell said Sunflower Communities was formed about three years ago. The group seeks small communities that have been passed over for retirement facilities. Chappell said their research showed a need for assisted living centers and nursing homes in the smaller communities because people would rather live close to their homes than be forced to move to a larger city. He said the need for these types of providers has increased and will continue to do so because the population segment which would use these facilities continues to grow.
The Perkins assisted care facility will be located on approximately two and one-half acres on Freeman Street between residences and a storage facility. An average room in the facility will be approximately 400 square feet, and will include a kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. The rooms will be handicap accessible, have individual heat/air units and contain no stoves (only microwave ovens).
The center will be totally locked-down, for the safety of the residents. Two levels of care will be provided, with re-evaluation of residents every six months.
The center will be operated by a registered nurse (RN), and will probably employ between 12 and 14 people.
There will initially be 28 rooms in the facility, which can house a single person or a couple. There is adequate room to add on more rooms or a dementia unit to the facility, which Chappell thinks is highly likely.
He said they hope to have the center full within 13 months, but anticipates being able to fill it within five months.
Chappell said he anticipates the cost to run around $2,500 per month per resident, which is the national average for assisted living care. Couples will receive a different rate, which will amount to approximately half of the full price for the second person, Chappell said.
He added that Sunflower intends to start lobbying the state legislature to allow Medicaid to pay for assisted living center costs. Currently the state only pays for nursing home care.

She said Quebecor and Westaff have formed a partnership to enables the companies to supply Quebecor’s workforce needs. They outlined the types of jobs available and what pay and benefits can be expected for those jobs. They asked chamber members to remember this opportunity should they come across someone who is looking for employment.

FreeWheel meeting set

A committee meeting will be held at noon Thursday, May 24, to discuss organization and plans for the upcoming Oklahoma FreeWheel visit. The meeting will be held at Stroud National Bank.

The bike tour is once again set to make an overnight stop in Perkins on Wednesday, June 13.

Volunteers and more vendors are needed for the event. Anyone who can help out and representatives of organizations interested in setting up vendor booths are encouraged to attend the meeting.

Announcements:

- Leprechaun LeRoy Gibson invited everyone to attend lunch at the Senior Citizen Center tomorrow at noon. He said it is the monthly Birthday Luncheon.

- Gill introduced Kristi Johnson from the Oklahoma Blood Institute. She announced there will be a blood drive at the Cimarron Casino next Thursday, March 22. Everyone who donates blood will receive a free t-shirt and be entered into a drawing to win an Alaskan cruise. She also brought flyers about the “Members for Life” program.

- Gill reminded everyone the State Trash-Off will be held on April 14. He asked everyone to put it on their calendars and also noted that the chamber events calendar is printed on the back of the meeting agenda. He said we still need volunteers for all activities and he asked members to consider helping out by signing up for one or more of those activities.

- Bob Johnson reminded everyone about the Perkins Masonic Lodge’s Stew & Bean Supper Friday evening at the elementary school cafeteria. It is a fundraiser for the Perkins Volunteer Fire Department.

Minutes: David Sasser made a motion to approve the minutes of the March 1 meeting; Merl Kinser seconded; motion approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Jalyn Bailey reported a balance of $20,839.61. Harland Wells made a motion to accept Bailey’s report; Patty Johnson seconded; motion approved.

Board and Committee Reports:

Centennial Dinner Theatre: Event chair Patty Johnson said all tickets for the March 30 event have been sold, but she said if you would like to put your name on the waiting list just see her. She will call if any openings occur. There are 312 tickets out right now. She said this will be a great event and we’ll make lots of money for the plaza.

Legislative Golf Tournament: Gill said tournament plans are progressing well, but more teams are needed. Anyone who can provide a team is asked to contact Kelly Myers, Gill, or any committee member.

New Business:

Budget: Bailey passed out copies of the final budget for 2007. Gill asked for questions or comments from the membership. He noted projected expenses of $47,966 and projected income of $48,550 will allow a net income of $584 for 2007. Rena Hines made a motion to approve the budget; Virginia Sasser seconded; motion approved.

POSSE request: Gill said he’d received a request from the POSSE organization for funds to help with the after graduation event for Perkins-Tryon seniors. Gill said the board is currently discussing the issue. He tabled the request so the board can discuss it further.

Program: David Sasser presented a program about progress on the Oklahoma Territorial Plaza.

He said the project has changed from its original plan which mainly featured two bronze statues to be placed on land donated by Mike & BJ MeWherter on the west side of N. Main Street. Recent developments have moved the project to the east side of N. Main on property south and east of Stroud National Bank.

The project will be divided into three phases:

Phase 1 will include the Centennial Trails and Arboretum. The cost of this phase is approximately $363,000

Phase 2 will include the statues of Frank “Pistol Pete” Eaton and Chief Notichimine, a pavilion, parking, playground, a waterspray park, and acreage. The cost of this phase is approximately $608,000

Phase 3 will include a cultural center, a traditional Iowa Tribe bark house, a log cabin, and a barn.

Sasser said he has already received enough financial commitments from private donors to be able to fund most of the first two phases, but he hopes to be able to obtain grant funding for some of the development.

During the meeting, Sasser and Martha Larsen unveiled a Mike Larsen painting of Pistol Pete. Sasser said Larsen donated the work to the plaza effort. Only 250 numbered prints will be made of Larsen’s painting, and donors of $1,000 or more will receive those prints. The first prints will be presented during the Centennial Dinner Theater on March 30.

Martha Larsen also announced an exciting related event. She said Oklahoma Today magazine is interested in helping to promote the plaza and will host “Pete’s Market Day” from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on May 12 in Perkins. She said this is designed to be a statewide event to bring people into Perkins, and it won’t cost Perkins anything. She noted it would be a great opportunity to make it an annual event for Perkins.

Meetings: The next general membership meeting of the chamber will be at noon, Thursday, April 5, at the Lion’s Den.

- Virginia Sasser said she has tickets for the Centennial Dinner on March 30. Anyone who needs tickets can see her

- Gill congratulated Iowa Tribe Four Winds Child Care Center and Tech, Inc. as award recipients of Smart Start Payne
County’s “Spirit of the Family” Award. They will receive their awards next Friday, March 9, during a luncheon at
OSU.
- Mel Miller said he had recently attended a legislative forum and was asked to pose a question to the group. One of
the legislators is working on a “100 Ideas” concept that targets ideas for future legislation, or areas that need to be
worked on by legislators. Bernadette Huber asked if this could be something that the chamber could work on during
a regular meeting. Miller said he was told the forum could last up to two hours, so it would be too long for a chamber
meeting. Gill asked the members in attendance to raise their hands if they would like to participate in a forum. About
six people expressed interest.
Minutes: Martha Larsen made a motion to approve the minutes of the Feb. 15 meeting; Jack Vassar seconded; motion
approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Jalyn Bailey reported a balance of $18,683.78. David Sasser made a motion to accept
Bailey’s report; Merl Kinser seconded; motion approved.
Board and Committee Reports:
Centennial Dinner Theatre: Plans for the March 30 event are progressing. Cindy Sheets, director of the play, said Chris
Petermann had agreed to handle sound for the play. A person is still needed to handle lights, however. Anyone
who can do that, or has suggestions to help with it, is asked to contact her.
Legislative Golf Tournament: Kelly Myers said the committee needs more participation from chamber members. Also
more donations for prizes and goody bags and team entries are needed.
Schedule: Gill challenged members to sign up to help with events during the coming year. He said chairs are needed for
the annual Garage Sale Day, City-Wide Clean-Up Day, and the FreeWheel visit.
Old Business:
Budget: Gill said the board is still working on the budget and he hopes to bring the final recommendations before the
membership soon.
New Business:
Premium Sale: Chamber was asked to contribute $500 toward the Premium Sale this year. Mel Miller asked if these
funds were for add-on money. Petermann said the money will go toward a pool to buy Perkins kid’s animals.
Miller made a motion to approve the contribution; Virginia Sasser seconded. Motion was approved.
Program: David Sasser introduced Perkins postmaster Sue Dempsey, who gave some updates on Main Street mail
delivery and other issues involving the post office.
Dempsey said approximately 28 names had been submitted for rural route extensions, with delivery boxes on the north
and south end of Main Street. This would be for rural delivery.
Dempsey said the extensions have been approved, and the Postal Service will supply the two boxes. The Perkins
Community Foundation will help fund the concrete slabs that will secure the bases of the boxes. Each box will have 12
compartments with two parcel lockers. Rural carriers will be required to come inside the business to deliver insured or
certified mail. Dempsey said it will probably be six weeks before the boxes are installed.
She said possible locations under consideration are at the Perkins Drug corner and the Perkins Tag Office corner. If
anyone has other ideas or questions, they are asked to contact her.
Harland Wells asked Dempsey if the post office has enough room for post office boxes. She said there is a limited
number of some sizes of boxes. She also said many people have expressed a desire for a new post office which features
handicap access, better parking, and no swing boxes.
Dempsey spoke briefly about the importance of getting mail addressed properly. She also said those who have the #1-
sized boxes must pick up their mail daily because they are just too small to hold much mail.
She was asked about the removal of stamp machines from the lobby of the post office. She told the group the Postal
Service directed their removal because they were not making enough money and they were hard to maintain
Dempsey also noted there is still time to get the special Oklahoma Date of Issue postmark. It’s available until March 11.
There are also a few commemorative envelopes left.

Announcements:

- Merl Kinser announced the Friends Chapel Annual Soup Supper will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 5:30-7 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Music will be provided by the Glory Road Trio. Everyone is welcome.

- Kendra Moreland said information on the CREC/OSU School of Business Leadership series is now available. She brought brochures to today’s meeting and spoke briefly about the regional partnership between leaders from various communities.

Minutes: Minutes of the Jan. 4 meeting and the Feb. 1 awards banquet and officer installation were up for approval or correction. Kendra Moreland made a motion to approve the minutes of the Jan. 4 meeting; Patty Johnson seconded; motion approved. Martha Larsen made a motion to approve the minutes from Feb. 1; Jeana Leatherbury seconded; motion approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Jalyn Bailey reported a balance of $18,274. She also said 2007 membership applications are available today on the sign-in table, and that everyone will need one and should pick up one before leaving today. Mel Miller made a motion to accept Bailey’s report; Chris Petermann seconded; motion approved.

Board and Committee Reports:

Centennial Dinner Theatre: Patty Johnson, event chair, said the dinner theatre is planned for March 30 at Oak Park Retreat Center . She introduced Martha Larsen and Lisa Sasser, who are organizing an auction/silent auction to be held during the event. Larsen said they will be contacting local businesses and individuals to request donations for the auction. She hopes people will contribute “in the spirit of the Centennial Plaza being fabulous!” She also noted there will be minimum bids set on silent auction items.

Johnson said approximately 200 people are expected to attend the dinner. She already has commitments from MI Club members who will handle twenty-five tables. She is only needing sponsors for two more. If anyone is interested in helping, they are asked to get with her after the meeting. Johnson also noted the committee is offering corporate table sponsorships for $500, and she has several of those signed up.

Cindy Sheets, director of the play, said the group will need help with the play, so anyone who wants to be involved is asked to contact her.

Johnson asked chamber to commit $1,000 to the event. She also noted that the proceeds from the event will go to the Oklahoma Territorial Plaza . Chris Petermann made a motion to support the Centennial Dinner Theatre and commit $1,000 toward costs for the event; David Sasser seconded; motion was approved.

Legislative Golf Tournament: Kelly Myers said the committee met last week to work on a program and went over the list of last years sponsors. They are due to meet this Friday, too. Flyers and entry forms are available at the sign-in table. She also passed around brochures for VIP entry forms.

Calendar: Gill passed around a schedule of chamber activities for 2007. He noted the schedule doubles as a sign-up sheet for volunteers for the various events. He asked members to select at least one event to help out with and hand the sheet back to him.

New Business:

Minutes: Gill said the minutes of the previous meeting will be sent out with the meeting reminder on Mondays prior to regular meeting dates. He said anyone who wants to bring up corrections to minutes should bring their copy of the minutes with them to the meeting. A few copies will be printed and be made available at each meeting, but not one for each place setting, as had been done in the past.

Catering: Gill said the executive board had discussed a change in the meal catering plan for chamber meetings. He said all current participating meal caterers had been contacted about the new plan prior to its implementation, and are in agreement with it. So henceforth, Hello! Catering will provide at least one meal per month for chamber meetings, with the other meetings being rotated among the other participating restaurants.

Program: Mel Miller spoke briefly about current progress in Perkins. He noted several areas of growth and change:

1. Housing: The CHARMED development is bringing 30 single-family units to town. They are currently under construction along Knipe Street east of Timberline. The houses will eventually be available for purchase after 15-year leases (+10-year mortgage). The houses are from 1,200 to 1,400 sq.ft., have two-car garages, will be privately managed “starter homes.” In addition, the city received a $114,000 block grant to pride sewer infrastructure for these homes. It will also provide an opportunity for homes on the east side of Timberline Drive to connect to city sewer service.

2. Assisted living center: currently under development by private industry. The $2.5 million project will be located on 2.2 acres north of storage units on Freeman St . It will include 26 units with a dining area, kitchen and common area.

3. Sterling Park Apartments: The 32-units first phase is complete and is 90-100 percent occupied. Developers are now moving on to phase 2.

4. Storm water drainage project: Still working on the plan. A number of plans have been advanced. When complete, it will make a major difference in the appearance of Main Street .

5. REAP grant funds: A $30,000 grant to improve drainage on the west side of town (in the Second Street area). Will relocate water lines, etc. The city will receive assistance from Payne County on this project.

6. Wastewater: Currently working on applications with USDA for wastewater treatment system.

7. Water well: Water in the city’s major well (at Ampride) is slowly increasing, but there is still need for an additional water supply. Looking at acquiring water through Rural Water District #3, and accessing Perkins’ water rights from Kaw Reservoir through Stillwater and RWD.

Lessons From Geese

Editor's Note: "Lessons from Geese" was transcribed from a speech given by Angeles Arrien at the 1991 Organizational Development Network and was based on the work of Milton Olson. It circulated to Outward Bound staff throughout the United States. We share it here with the alumni community hoping that we can all learn these lessons.

FACT 1:

As each goose flaps its wings it creates an "uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

LESSON:

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

FACT 2:

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

LESSON:

If we have as much sense as a goose we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

FACT 3:

When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into formation and another goose flies to the point position.

LESSON:

It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent on each other's skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts, talents or resources.

FACT 4:

The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

LESSON:

We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is the quality of honking we seek.

FACT 5:

When a goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.

LESSON:

If we have as much sense as geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

This Thursday, January 18th, is the Annual Awards Dinner. Dinner...since the time is 6:30 p.m. at the Lion's Den. Hello! Catering will be catering this meal.

So, thaw out & be there! Please RSVP by Tuesday night, we do need a pretty accurate count for the caterers.

MY PREVIOUS EMAIL HAD THE CORRECT DATE BUT I THOUGHT I WAS A WEEK LATE...BUT AS WE ALL KNOW...I WAS EARLY. THUS THE PANIC IN MY EMAIL REGARDING TIME FOR RESPONSES.

A SENIOR MOMENT...THE HUSTLE & BUSTLE OF CHRISTMAS...WHO KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED, BUT JUST THOUGHT I'D SEND A REMINDER JUST IN CASE.

GOOD MORNING CHAMBER MEMBERS!

Well, here it is...time for the Christmas Chamber meeting of 2006.
As you know it will be held at the home of Patty & Gerry Johnson. They live just South of the Perkins Vet Clinic. North of Ampride on Hwy 177 N.

Hello Catering will be catering this meal. You know it will be great!

I don't have info regarding a program...we'll probably just enjoy visiting & the good food. If there is a program, we can still do that...

Please, Please respond no later than Tuesday evening regarding your attendance. We need a really close count on food orders. If you can't email, my phone number is 547-2773 or cell 405/664-1097.
